Kids & Toddlers Helmet Buying Guide – Features that a Helmet Should Have

It might not feel like it, but choosing the most appropriate helmet for your kid is not effortless. There are a handful of minute details that you need to take into account in selection criteria. Among the most important is getting the Right Sizing and Weight of a Kid’s Helmet.

Of course, an uncomfortable helmet will significantly be distracting for the kids, and that can affect their safety. But how do you select the right size for the little guy? Well, most of the manufacturers provide a youth motorcycle helmet size chart that you can use to identify the right fit for your boy or a girl.

A youth dirt bike helmet size chart may also prove helpful, especially for those kids that are into dirt bikes and racing. It is not a surprise if your kid’s heart beats for dirt bikes, and would do anything to get on the racing track, and spread their wings in glory.

Measure your child’s head before you proceed to the stores to make the purchase. Use a tape measure and shawl it around the thickest part of the head, which is mostly above the eyebrows and write the measurements in a piece of paper. You will need these measurements together with the sizing chart to get the right helmet for your child.

But apart from getting the best fit motorcycle helmet, you should know how to adjust it in the right way to make sure it is comfortable and safe. Ideally, the helmet should sit comfortably and squarely on top of their head – not tilt towards the front or the back.

That means you will also need good quality straps that are comfortable on the skin, and easily adjustable. The straps should also be loose enough to take it on and off easily. The internal adjustments that some of the motorcycle helmets come with are mostly sufficient in the majority of the cases.

The main types of helmets available for your kid include the standard bicycle helmet and the skater style helmet. Each of these elements has its advantages and disadvantages. For example, the standard bicycle helmet is entirely adjustable and has more vents for improved ventilation. Unfortunately, the helmet may not be comfortable for odd-shaped heads.

The skater style helmets do not mostly have a visor and are sometimes substantial. They lack dial-in adjustments but have more coverage. Unfortunately, the bicycle-style and the skater style may not have the necessary quality to make them the ideal kids motorcycle helmet.

The weight of the kid’s helmet can vary between models and brands. Most children want a lightweight helmet, but that should not leverage on the quality of the helmet. Of course, you will find helmets that are as light as 2 pounds, and others but are as massive as 7 pounds. Ideally, get a helmet that balances between the two factors appropriately.

You should not forget to check the quality of the shell. The most common material is thermoplastic and carbon fibre. and while each of them is good quality, it is always best to make sure that the blend of elements in the motorcycle helmet is appropriate. Carbon fibre helmets do not mostly have pure carbon fibre, and instead are composites to allow for adequate flex and Shock absorption in case of a crash.

The safety certification of the toddler helmet should never be lacking, and always make sure of that. At a minimum, all kid’s helmet should come with a DOT certification.

Visibility is an essential factor in kid’s helmet. The other road users should see the little motorcycle from a distance. Furthermore, the helmet should allow them to see the road ahead clearly. The field of vision should be adequate for efficiency and safety on the road.

When it comes to a kids motorcycle helmet, durability and robustness are critical factors. The helmet should boast the quality to overcome the brute force and protect the wearer from injury. Kids that love to ride dirt bikes are not alien to falls and injuries, and the right helmet should perform its function sufficiently.

Cleaning and Storage of a Toddler Helmet

There are about three parts of the toddler helmet that you should clean separately. For the inside pads, remove them from the helmet and watch them with hand. Use soap and water — nothing else.

But it is still safe to throw the inside parts in the washing machine together with the other motorcycle gear. However, you will need to maintain the washing machine at a low cycle. The helmet straps will always be next to the skin of your child and will absorb sweat, moisture and accumulate dirt. Wash the straps with soap and water.

For the shell of the helmet, use soap and water to clean it as well. Don’t dip it in the water for very long, as it may affect the integrity of the inside materials, and that is not a good thing. Prolonged periods in water may affect the strength of the adhesives, and they may not be as useful as before.

It is not every place inside the house or the store that is appropriate for storage of the helmet. Ideally, the storage space should be dark and away from direct sunlight and heat source. It would not be a good idea to leave the helmet inside the boot of your car, especially during the hot summers as it may lead to degradation of the structure.

The storage space should be dry as well. One recommended place that you can keep your helmet is the drawers of your wardrobe.

Why Do Kids Love Themed Motorcycle Helmets Much?

It is in their nature for kids to love themed objects because they look attractive to them. As they grow older, their preferences may change, and they may not find the same things as beautiful. But before that time, it is always good to choose the themed motorcycle helmets that they will feel comfortable and confident using.

An example includes the best graphic kids motorcycle helmet .

When Should You Replace Your Kids Helmet?

In the majority of the cases, the manufacturers will state how long the kids should use the helmet. Usually, it is five years. Some brands like Bell will state three years, but there are other factors to consider when to replace your kid’s helmet.

Other conditions under which you should change the helmet include after a crash. The kids that love dirt bikes and the dirt bike sports will often fall, and the constant hits to the helmet can affect its overall quality. Change the helmet if you notice any changes such as the development of a crack, or after using significantly with dirt bikes. After all, the safety of your kid comes before anything, including the extra investment on a new helmet.

Other Motorcycle Gear for Kids and Toddlers

Apart from the helmet, the kids will also need other protective clothing to keep them from injury and to ensure their comfort. For example, the youth dirt bike riding gear will come in handy for the kids that love off-road motorcycle games. There is also specific motorcycle footwear for your children. Don’t let them into the dirt bike competitions with their usual sneakers.

Concluding Remarks

The kids’ motorcycle helmet is among the essential items that your child should have, even before they can test ride the new motorcycle. Motorcycle crashes can occur, even for the kids, and the helmet will ensure they live to see another day.

The above list incorporates some of the best helmets for the Junior. Ideally, you should include them in any purchase decision so that they can pick the one they love most. You can let them choose from the above list, as they are the safest and most durable in the market.
